Aluen Cap - Slow Release Oxalic Acid - Varroa Treatment
Current Expiry Date: Jan 2028
Waggle & Forage now stock Aluen CAP, a slow-release, organic, oxalic acid treatment designed to help control Varroa mites in honey bee colonies. The strips are placed within the brood chamber, where normal bee movement distributes a controlled dose of oxalic acid throughout the hive, targeting phoretic Varroa mites over 42 days.
Benefits:
- Leaves no detectable residue in honey or wax
- Simple and convenient to apply
- Provides up to 42 days of active treatment
- Safe and easy for beekeepers to handle
- Gentle on honey bees when used as directed
Please read the APVMA Emergency Permit PER95790 that allows for Aluen CAP use in Australian honey bee colonies, as part of an integrated Varroa management program.
How Aluen CAP Works:
Oxalic acid is a naturally occurring organic compound that has been used by beekeepers around the world for many years to help control Varroa mites.
Unlike traditional oxalic acid treatments that provide a short-term application, Aluen CAP delivers a controlled release of oxalic acid over an extended period. The active ingredient is absorbed into specially designed cellulose strips, which are suspended directly within the brood nest where bees naturally interact with them.
This sustained release provides ongoing mite control for up to 42 days, covering two complete brood cycles and helping overcome one of the key limitations of conventional oxalic acid treatments.
As bees move throughout the colony, they come into contact with the strips and gradually distribute the oxalic acid within the hive.
This continuous exposure targets phoretic Varroa mites as they emerge from brood cells and move onto adult bees. While Aluen CAP does not penetrate capped brood, its extended treatment period allows it to intercept mites throughout their reproductive cycle, helping to significantly reduce overall mite populations and support healthier colonies.
