Apiguard - Organic Thymol Varroa Treatment

Apiguard is an easy-to-use, thymol-based gel treatment for the management of Varroa mites in honey bee colonies. Supplied in ready-to-use trays, the gel releases thymol gradually throughout the hive as the bees move and clean the product.

Treatment instructions

A complete treatment requires two 50g trays per colony:

  1. Peel back the foil lid of the first tray, leaving one corner attached.
  2. Place the open tray centrally above the brood frames, gel side facing upwards.
  3. Ensure there is at least 5mm of free space between the top of the tray and the hive cover.
  4. After two weeks, place a newly opened second tray beside the first.
  5. Leave both trays in place for a further 2–4 weeks, until the gel has disappeared or honey supers need to be installed.

The total treatment period should be a minimum of four weeks and a maximum of six weeks. Do not reuse trays.

When to use Apiguard

Treat colonies in spring before honey supers are added and before the first honey flow. Alternatively, apply in autumn immediately after all surplus honey and honey supers have been removed.

For effective treatment:

  • Do not use when maximum daily temperatures are below 15°C or when colony activity is very low.
  • Do not use while honey supers are present.
  • Do not feed colonies immediately before treatment.
  • Weak colonies should be combined before treatment.
  • Small colonies and nucs may require only one tray, left in place for at least four weeks.

Some temporary agitation may occur during treatment. At higher temperatures, a slight and temporary reduction in young brood may occasionally be observed. If bees begin removing uncapped brood near the tray, remove the product from the colony.

Important: Do not exceed the recommended dose. Always read and follow the complete product label before use.

Pack size: 10 × 50g trays – sufficient for five complete two-tray colony treatments.

Shelf life: 36 months when stored appropriately.  Our current stock was manufactured October 2025.
